How do farmers cope with massive and accelerated urbanization? This cultural ethnography focuses on the transformation of a rural community of farmers from Wenzhou into the largest low-cost clothing production and sales hub in Beijing during the 1990s. The book, <em>Communities Across Boundaries: The Life History of Zhejiang Village in Beijing<\/em> by Professor Biao Xiang, Director of the Department of Anthropology of Economic Experimentation at Max Planck Institute for Ethnological Research, explores the dynamic relationships between the state and society, central and local governments, urban and rural areas, and governance and resistance in China after the reform and opening-up period. This event features a direct presentation by the author and discussions with domestic scholars.
