The seminar began with a brief introduction on the advent of the Big Data era and the resulting emergence of new types of data. Big data research and its application along with the importance of sensemaking and visualization of data were examined. Professor Lee emphasized the significance of finding meaning in an immense amount of data through social computing. Professor Lee pointed out that the demand for new computing power and data literacy distinguishes big data analysis from general social science research methods. Furthermore, research on social media and the growing recognition of its significance due to the rapid increase in the number of users and its potential for predicting behavior were examined. Social media research topics such as follower-following study, text mining, and social viewing were discussed.
