Hyun Bang Shin is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies and Director of the Saw Swee Hock\u00a0Southeast Asia Centre<\/a>. He also co-directs the MSc programme in\u00a0Urbanisation and Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hyun\u2019s research centres on the critical analysis of the political economic dynamics of urbanisation with particular attention to cities in Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore. His most recent project on circulating urbanism and (Asian) capital has also brought him to work on Quito, Manila, Iskandar Malaysia, Kuwait City and London. His research themes include speculative urbanisation; the politics of redevelopment; displacement; gentrification; housing; the right to the city; mega-events as urban spectacles; mega-projects.<\/p>\n

Hyun has published widely in major international journals and contributed to numerous books on the above themes. His books include\u00a0Global Gentrifications: Uneven Development and Displacement<\/a>\u00a0(Policy Press, 2015);\u00a0Planetary Gentrification<\/a>\u00a0(Polity Press, 2016);\u00a0Anti Gentrification: What is to be Done<\/a>\u00a0(Dongnyok, 2017);\u00a0Neoliberal Urbanism, Contested Cities and Housing in Asia<\/a>\u00a0(Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).<\/p>\n

He is a board member (trustee) of the\u00a0Urban Studies Foundation<\/a>, and sit on the international advisory board of the journal\u00a0Antipode<\/a>\u00a0as well as on the editorial board of the journals\u00a0International Journal of Urban and Regional Research<\/a>;\u00a0Urban Geography<\/a>;\u00a0CITY<\/a>;\u00a0City, Culture and Society<\/a>; Radical Housing Journal;\u00a0Space and Environment<\/a>\u00a0[in Korea];\u00a0China City Planning Review<\/a>\u00a0[in China].
