This colloquium discusses the industrial cities in northeast China in the perspective of urban resilience. Harbin is a representative industrial city in northeast China where deteriorated industrial cities are concentrated. The city was initially established in late 19th century when Russia, then attempting to expand in Far East Asia, took the Triple Intervention as an opportunity to construct the Trans-Manchurian Railway. Through this investigation, we will look into the transition in the current heavy-industry-oriented industrial structure of Harbin, where ‘Northeast phenomenon’ and ‘new Northeast phenomenon’ which refer to the socioeconomic recession in the northeastern region can be observed. Moreover, Daqing is a typical petrochemical industrial city that rose along with the oil and gas development in the 1950s, which currently seeks to make a transition into the automobile industry following the oil depletion.
