Abstract: ASEAN already becomes the seventh-largest economy in the world, with a combined GDP of $2.4 trillion in 2013 and is projected to rank as the fourth-largest economy by 2050. There is no typical ASEAN consumer, but some broad trends have emerged: a greater focus on leisure activities, a growing preference for modern retail formats and increasing brand awareness, and moving to online.
With a population of 600 million Southeast Asia is poised to eventually become the third-largest e-commerce market in the world, second only to China and India and ultimately surpassing the U.S. Local, regional and global players stepped in this market and then Southeast Asia is said to be on the cusp of an e-commerce golden age.
However, there are barriers to overcome– logistics and payment system in order to develop the market. In terms of logistics cost, most of countries in ASEAN are highly ranked and adopt cash-on-delivery system to reduce risk of payment and distribution.
